The Procedure

During your root canal procedure, a specialist endodontics team will first ensure that you feel no pain through the use of our modern anaesthetic solutions. The first step of the root canal procedure is to drill a small hole into the pulp chamber. Through this hole the root canals are cleaned and widened using fine instruments called files. Once your specialist is happy that the root canals have been thoroughly disinfected, the canals can be filled and sealed to prevent any possibility of reinfection.

Some of our patients require a follow-up appointment at our clinic after their root canal procedure. Our expert team will let you know if this is required and will be on hand should you have any root canal questions. They will also advise you on looking after your teeth while you recover from root canal treatment.

You shouldn’t experience much post root canal procedure pain but, if you do, taking paracetamol or ibuprofen can relieve this. Oral hygiene is important to prevent the need for further root canal treatment and we recommend all of our patients attend regular hygiene appointments.

Will my root canal treatment be painful?

Of all the root canal questions we have been asked, this is the one that patients worry about the most. The answer is a definite ‘No!’ Root canal treatment is not painful because local anaesthesia is used throughout the procedure. Here we have the very latest in anaesthesia expertise and equipment and can deliver pain relief throughout your procedure.

What will happen if I don’t have root canal treatment?

This is one of the most common root canal questions. Issues that involve the inside of your tooth are unlikely to get better on their own. If you suspect that you have an infection or are feeling any type of discomfort we recommend that you make an appointment as soon as possible and allow our team to examine you and suggest further action.

Any delay in seeking expert help may lead to a failure to remove infection and necessitate the extraction of the tooth. Although we are very experienced in both extractions and tooth replacement, we would always prefer our patients to keep their own teeth wherever possible.

Are there any alternatives to root canal treatment?

Sometimes a tooth can be so damaged that root canal treatment is not recommended. When you visit our clinic for your initial consultation appointment we will examine your mouth carefully, answer your root canal questions and explain our recommendations. If your tooth is not suitable for root canal treatment our team may recommend extraction and replacement with a tooth implant or a dental bridge.

What is the success rate of root canal treatment?

In general root canal treatment has a high success rate of around 95%. We have assembled the very best in expertise and state-of-the-art equipment and have very stable and predictable results. However, even with the best of treatment, there may be additional circumstances, outside the control of our team, that lead to a lack of healing. This doesn’t happen often but our team can take other steps to eliminate the infection should the necessity occur.
